AR3 expands Overland carbonatite discovery
Australian Rare Earths (ASX: AR3) has announced that follow-up drilling at its 100%-owned Overland Project in South Australia has extended the Overland carbonatite discovery approximately 5km south of the original discovery hole, OV167. The standout result came from hole OV176, which intersected 130 metres (downhole) of carbonatite from 68m depth and ended at 201m while still in carbonatite. True thickness is not yet known and the system remains open at depth.
Two further step-out holes helped define the extent of the intrusion. OV177 returned a stronger gamma response than OV176, which the Company interprets as possible alteration at the margins of the carbonatite, while OV178 recorded much lower gamma readings and defined the western margin at that location. The Company says the results show a strong correlation with a ~10km magnetic corridor, supporting its interpretation of a large-scale carbonatite complex and validating magnetics as an effective targeting tool. Approximately one week of drilling remains in the current program.
Samples have been dispatched for laboratory analysis, with results expected in approximately six weeks. These assays will be key to determining the fertility and economic significance of the system, as current observations are based on visual estimates and pXRF readings only. The discovery has also attracted interest from the ARC Training Centre for Future Critical Resources, Adelaide University and the Geological Survey of South Australia, whose representatives have visited the site to inspect core from OV176.
